A major investment by BAA Aberdeen is set to transform the terminal forecourt at Aberdeen Airport promising improved security measure and more convenient access for members of the public flying to and from the North East’s biggest transport gateway.

The £2 million investment programme will include a new dedicated access lane for taxis and service buses and a drop-off area for passengers. Work will begin on Monday and will run for around 18 weeks.

The pedestrianisation of the area - previously used as the inner forecourt – will improve ease of access for the travelling public, while further enhancements to existing security arrangements will be introduced. This will include the replacement of the temporary concrete blocks – in the wake of the attack on Glasgow Airport last year - with permanent bollards.

In line with the airport’s commitment to reduce CO2 emissions, the project will also involve the replacement of existing lighting with low energy, high efficiency LED fittings complementing the work already completed to install solar panels on the terminal smoking shelters.

Aberdeen Airport’s customer services director Will Dougherty said: “I am confident that when this work is complete the forecourt will meet the needs of our passengers and represent a significant improvement on the existing arrangements, improving the end-to-end experience of key stakeholders and passengers alike.

“Unfortunately, during the construction phase of the project a degree of disruption is inevitable, particularly in the area currently used as the drop-off area and car park. We will be working hard to ensure that these new arrangements are introduced as smoothly as possible, therefore minimising potential inconvenience throughout construction.”
