The Identity and Passport Service has decided that people aged 16 or 17 years old can now apply for a passport without parental consent.
From December 10th the changes will take place, however if there is a court order involved or the young person has a mental disability then parental consent will still be needed.
Counter signatory is required for children aged under 11 years old when their passports come up for renewal. This is so that a child can be proerly identified and it also will help prevent child abduction and human trafficking. The decision for this came as the Home Office Minister decided that it was time for young people to take responsibility for their actions and decisions.
