More Airlines are Increasing their Fuel Surcharges June 2nd 2008 by Kirstie

Two large airlines have now increased their fuel surcharges on passenger fares. Flyglobespan and Virgin Atlantic are the latest in a long line of airlines to charge passengers more.

On May 22nd the price of one barrel of oil went up to £68.85 meaning the airlines had no choice but to increase their surcharges.

The prices on the oil remain at a high level, the highest level in years. The ongoing credit crunch is also a contributing factor. Airlines cannot manage the increasing costs on their own so they have to charge passengers more.

The surcharge that Flyglobespan are looking at introducing will be between £20 and £25 per passenger.

Virgin Atlantic have stated that they intend to increase their fuel charges to coincide with cabin location and travelling distance. Therefore, the increase can range from £2.50 on short-haul economy flights to £28.50 on long-haul upper class flights.

The move follows British Airways who last week increased their surcharges for the second time in the space of a month.
