A police unit is to be created that will specialise in protecting Edinburgh Airport.

39 officers already look after Edinburgh Airport, however a further 5 are to be added. These officers will also have authorisation to use firearms.

The plan to do this has come after the terrorist attack at Glasgow Airport earlier this year. The decision to add more officers and base them all at the airport is to reassure passengers travelling and alleviate their security fears.

BAA have already said that they will pay the £2.5 million annual cost to cover the change.

A benefit of having the police based at the airport means that the airport will not have to rely on or worry about getting other police officers to the airport in a crisis.
