A historic landing by an Airbus A319
13th December 2007 at 02:47pm by Kevin Newton
An Airbus A319 made history when it landed in the Antarctic on an ice runway.
A permanent air link is now to be maintained between Hobart in Tasmania and the Wilkins Runway in the Australian Antarctic where the passenger aircraft landed.
The new landing is a breakthrough as it means that the base can be reached a lot quicker compared to the 10 days it takes if you travel by sea.
Tourists are not going to be able to use the new route yet, although who know what the future brings.
The runway cost £4.3 million to build with builders having to work in freezing conditions. The runway is 2 and a half miles long.
