Origins of the Zulu Language
Zulu is one of the Bantu languages, which constitute a sub-group of the Benue-Congo branch of the Niger-Congo family. This is in turn part of the Niger-Kordofanian family of languages.

Zulu is spoken by the Zulu people of southern Africa, who live mainly in the provinces of KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng.

The language is closely related to Xhosa and Swazi, the three belonging to the Nguni branch of the Bantu family.

How many people speak the Zulu language?
There are about 8 million speakers of Zulu.

Zulu-speaking Countries
Zulu is one of the major Bantu languages of South Africa. It is also spoken in Mozambique.

Zulu Music and Dance

The drum is Africa's most traditional musical instrument. Zulu warriors are stirred into battle anger by the beat of the drum. Drums were also used as a means of healing: It is thought that the beat of drums can cure ills of the mind and the soul.

Dancing is central to Zulu culture, and there are numerous traditional Zulu dances, each with their own distinctive movements and significance. For example, The Hunting Dance imitates the actions of hunting and the bravery it requires. It’s a fiery dance using sticks to mimic spears, and was danced before a hunt. The girls also dance their own version to welcome the men back from hunting. The Dance of the Small Shield dates from the time of Shaka Zulu, and is a rhythmic dance used to encourage military unity. Today it is normally performed at Royal occasions. A similar dance using a spear and shield is the umGhubho.

Zulu Food and Drink

The Zulu culinary repertoire encompasses some forty dishes, which are mostly vegetarian even though the Zulus do enjoy meat. Maize, tubers and pumpkin are commonly eaten in different forms. Tomatoes, cabbage and onions are also popular when available.

Brewing of beer is the duty of the women. The brew is distinctive
