Origins of the Yoruba Language
Yoruba is one of the major languages of Nigeria and is also spoken in Benin. It was the language of the great Oyo Empire of Nigeria, which at its peak in the early 18th Century included much of the present-day Benin. Yoruba is a member of the Kwa branch of the Niger Congo family of languages.

Yoruba, like other Niger Congo languages is a tonal language, which uses distinctions in the pitch of a syllable to change the meaning of a word.

How many people speak the Yoruba language?
About 25 million people in the southwestern part of Nigeria speak Yoruba. Another 750,000 speakers can be found in Benin.

Yoruba Art

Yoruba art includes beautiful wood, brass and occasional terracotta sculptures as well as a great diversity of mask forms, due to varying masking traditions. Pottery, weaving, carving and bead working also have great artistic value.

Yoruba Music and Dance

Yoruba folk music is best known for an advanced drumming tradition, using the dundun, a cylindrical, double-headed bass drum. Ensembles using the dundun consist of a various size of tension drums and kettledrums (gudugugu). The drum is used to imitate the tonality of Yoruba, thus “talking” to the listener. Much of the Yoruba music is spiritual in nature and strongly linked to Yoruba mythology

Yoruba Food and Drink

Yams, sweet root vegetables, are the most important food for the Yoruba. They also eat grains, plantains, corn, meat, fish and poultry. They make stews out of yams, plantains, corn, cassava and taro and often use palm from the nuts of the palm oil tree to cook with.
