Where does Tagalog come from?
Tagalog is a member of the Indonesian sub-group of the Malayo-Polynesian family of languages which also includes Malagasy, Malay, Indonesian, and Javanese.

Tagalog was declared the Philippine national language in 1936 despite other contenders. A compromise reached in 1973 confirmed Philipino (Filipino) as the national language. This is based on Tagalog, but has linguistic elements of other Philippine languages.

How many people speak Tagalog?
Tagalog is the first language of about 15 million people, most of whom live in southern Luzon in an area that includes Manila. Its study has been strongly encouraged by the government and it is estimated that over 75 percent of the population at least understands the language, but there are about 80 other languages and dialects spoken in the islands.

In how many countries?
Tagalog is spoken in the Philippines and the USA.

Tagalog Culture

Tagalog Music and Dance
The Ifuguas, who have lived in Baguio for over 2000 years use bamboo and wood to make instruments. The Ifuguas have many songs for their Gods to give them a good harvest.

Tagalog Food and Drink
Standard dishes, always served with rice, include meat and vegetables cooked with vinegar and garlic, grilled grouper, meat stews and a huge variety of soups - rice, noodle, beef, chicken, liver, kneecap, offal and sour vegetable. Side dishes include strips of unripened papaya, fermented fish or shrimp paste and bite-sized pieces of crispy pigskin.

Typical Philippine food includes sinigang - a cold, sour stew that equally accommodates fish, meat, fowl, or prawns; adobo - meat, shellfish, or vegetables cooked in vinegar; pancit - the many kinds of noodles found at all celebrations and rellenong manok - the capon stuffed for Christmas?

Tagalog Attractions
Manila Manila is a modern-looking city - a result of virtual destruction during WWII - but the sprawling city boasts its fair share of colonial ruins, enough to keep those historically inclined amused for a while, anyway.

Banaue The spectacular rice terraces around Banaue, in north Luzon, have been described as the eighth wonder of the world. Carved out of the hillside by Ifugao tribes people 2000 to 3000 years ago, these remarkable terraces stretch like stepping-stones to the sky - some reaching an altitude of 1500m.
