Where does Scots Gaelic come from?
All Celtic languages are traced back to Common Celtic, which was the parent language of both the Continental and Insular Celtic languages. The speakers of Common Celtic probably lived in the eastern part of central Europe, some of them close to the Germanic peoples.
Gaelic is a member of the Goidelic Celtic branch of the Indo-European family of languages and is closely related to Irish and Manx. Cornish, Welsh and Breton are also descended from the same original Celtic language but are part of the Brythonic Celtic branch.
How many people speak Scots Gaelic?
Around 86,000 people speak Gaelic Language, with about 30,000 of these using it as their first language
In how many countries?
Gaelic is spoken mainly in the Western Isles (e.g. Skye, Lewis, Harris) of Scotland.

Scots Gaelic Culture
Scots Gaelic Music and Dance
Perhaps the most famous icon of Scottish traditional culture is the Highland bagpipe. The Scottish folk circuit is where most Scots would look for a real cultural night out.
Scots Gaelic Food and Drink
Scotland has a reputation for some of the best game dishes in the world (smoked salmon, venison and grouse). Other legendary Scottish meals include porridge, shortbread, haggis (a mix of chopped lungs, heart and liver mixed with oatmeal and boiled in a sheep's stomach) and Scotch broth. Whisky is still the country's biggest export.
Scots Gaelic Attractions
Edinburgh
Edinburgh is one of the world's greatest cities. Its dramatic site, extraordinary architectural heritage and cultural vigour soon charm all visitors. The crowded tenements of the historic Old Town contrast with the orderly grid of the Georgian New Town, which in most cities would be a historic enclave by itself.
Inner Hebrides
The Inner Hebrides off the western coast of Scotland (which include Iona, Mull, Tiree and Skye), are the country's most accessible and bewitching islands.
Aberdeen
Almost everything in Aberdeen is built of granite. Aberdeen is the service port for one of the world's largest offshore oilfields.

"I bought your Learn Malay CD today - I've only just begun, but I wanted to say how much I am enjoying it. I studied Malay from a book all day yesterday, making some 25 pages of notes on grammar and vocab, but I remember more from your CD from just an hour!" - James Bryce
