Where does Nepali come from?
Nepali is a member of the Indo-Iranian branch of the Indo-European Language family and is similar to Hindi. The modern Aryan languages are considered to have evolved from Sanskrit, the ancient language of the Indian sub-continent.

Nepal's indigenous population consists of the numerically dominant Indo-Nepalese, whose ancestors migrated to the country from the south and whose language is Nepali, and the Tibeto-Nepalese, whose forebears entered Nepal from the north. Much intermingling of the two groups has occurred.

How many people speak Nepali?
Nepali is spoken by up to 20 million people

In how many countries?
It is the official language of Nepal but is also used in parts of north east India and in Bhutan and Sikkim.

Nepali Culture

Nepali Music and Dance
Music and dance are favourite pastimes in Nepal. Religious ceremonies require the use of drums and wind instruments preserved from ancient times.

Traditional folk musicians, or gaines, gather for an evening of singing and socialising; classical dancing and trance-like masked dances enliven the Kathmandu Valley and Bhaktapur regions.

Nepali Food and Drink
Popular appetisers include Chatanmari - rice flour pizza with meat or egg topping, or plain. Chhoyla - roasted meat diced and spiced, a versatile snack and Gundruk-Ko Jhol - a slightly sour and tangy soup of dried and fermented vegetables.

Typical main dishes would be: Aloo Tama - bamboo shoot and potato curry enlivened with a variety of spices and herbs. Beans - a curry preparation of large and small beans to go with the main course of rice. Dal - lentil soup eaten with plain rice and meat curries - curried meat with lots of spices and gravy served with the main course of rice. Very often these would be accompanied by a relish such as Gundruk - dried and fermented green vegetables.

Juju Dhow - delicious creamy curd from Bhaktapur, and Sikarni - yogurt preparation mixed with dried fruits are popular puddings..

Lassi is the local produced beer (a refreshing mixture of curd and water), chang, a Himalayan home brew made from barley. Rakshi or Ayla is firewater distilled from rice. It is colourless and best drunk neat.

Nepali Attractions
Kathmandu The tightly packed historical centre of the country's capital and largest city reeks of history with its squares and temples.

Patan Patan, the second-largest city in the valley is justly proud of its temples and artisans and it is their handiwork that provides the focus of the stunning Durbar Square - choc-a-block with the largest display of Newari architecture in Nepal.

Bhaktapur Bhaktapur is in many ways the most medieval of the three major cities in the Kathmandu Valley. Despite recent development, the city still retains a distinctly timeless air, with much of its glorious architecture dating from the end of the 17th century.

Kathmandu Valley There are a number of other fascinating villages, temples and stupas scattered around the valley including the huge stupa of Bodhnath, which is the largest in the country and among the largest in the world.
