Origins of the Hindi Language
Hindi is a member of the Indic branch of the Indo-Iranian sub-group of the Indo-European (Aryan) family of languages. The modern Aryan languages are considered to have evolved from Sanskrit, the ancient language of the Indian sub-continent. Hindi probably evolved from one of the standard dialects of Sanskrit and had become established as a language from about the 10th century.
Hindi is written in the Devanagari alphabet employed for Sanskrit and has a vocabulary of Indic origin. Most of the main Indian languages have different dialects and variations, sometimes very different from each other. Hindi has more than ten variations.
The official Hindi is based on the dialect which was spoken in the Delhi-Agra region with a Sanskrit vocabulary.
Most Indians are Hindus and they perceive Urdu, written in Persian-Arabic script, as a Muslim language. Before the independence of India the Muslims supported the continuation of Urdu as the official language of India, while the Hindus supported Hindi. In order to secure Hindi's position as the sole official language of India, the political leaders convinced Indians in the north of the country to claim that they spoke a Hindi dialect and so the British bureaucrats put different dialect speakers together in the Hindi-speaking category.
How many people speak the Hindi language?
Nearly 500 million people speak Hindi. Of these about 180 million use it as their mother tongue.
Hindi-speaking Countries
When India attained independence in 1947, the Constitution recognised Hindi, in the Devanagiri script, as India's official and sole national language. However, since less than half of the population had a working knowledge of it, Hindi came to share that title with English. The regional languages have been recognized as official languages of the states. In many cases, the state boundaries are drawn along linguistic lines.
The main areas in India where Hindi is spoken are, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Himachal, Haryana, Panjab, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, parts of Maharashtra, Andhra & Karnataka. Thus, Hindi is spoken mainly in the northern part of India but it is widely understood all across India, except for a few states of southern India.
Outside India, Hindi-speaking people are found in Nepal (8 million), Mauritius (1 million), South Africa (250,000), Uganda (150,000), Australia, Fiji, Germany, Guyana, New Zealand, Singapore, Trinidad, United Kingdom, United Arab Emirates and Yemen.
