Hawaiian Culture

Hawaiian Music and Dance
The hula The revival of traditional Hawaiian culture has seen an explosion of hula. The hula is a beautiful flowing Hawaiian dance that tells a story. The music is comprised of repetitive chants, called mele, either alone or combined with music. The hula began in ancient Hawaii as a form of worship. The musical instruments were often made of gourds, coconuts, or logs covered with shark-skin membrane and the ukelele. The hula survives today through study, competitions, shows, and the dances for visitor's enjoyment.

Hawaiian Food and Drink
The Luau is known as the Hawaiian barbecue. It is normally a large party where the main course is Kalua pig - a whole pig steamed in an underground oven. You will also find pupus (hawaiian appetizers), laulaus (meat, normally pork, cooked inside ti leaves), limu (seaweed), lomi-lomi salmon (salmon cooked with tomato and onion), and haupia (coconut and pineapple pudding).

Hawaiian Attractions
If you're looking for lush scenery, Kauai is a good choice. Kauai's central volcanic peak, Mt Waialeale, is allegedly the wettest place on earth, and the island is so richly green that it's nicknamed 'The Garden Island'.

Oahu, nicknamed 'The Gathering Place', is the most populous, most developed and most well known of the Hawaiian Islands.

The most famous beach is Waikiki beach, but it is very touristy. Another attractive place is Hanauma Bay, which is a wide, sheltered bay of sapphire and turquoise waters set in a rugged volcanic ring.

The island's surf beaches (Banzai Pipeline, Sunset Beach, Makaha) are legendary.

There are also historic monuments to visit like the Punchbowl National Cemetery and Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor, the Iolani Palace, America's only Royal Palace where Kings and Queens of old Hawaii once ruled.

Molokai Among Molokai's biggest attractions are the world's tallest sea cliffs, plunging an astounding 3,000 feet to meet the crashing surf.
