Where does Alsatian come from?
Alsatian is spoken mainly in the region of Alsace-Lorriane (northeastern France). It is also spoken in areas of Switzerland, Austria and southern Germany.

Alsatian is an Indo-European language and a member of the West Germanic Group, however, most speakers of Alsatian are bilingual in French but they do not necessarily know standard German. Alsatians closest relative is probably that of Swiss-German. Since 1945 standard French has been ever increasing in Alsace, and today French is the main langauge. People above the age of 70 still speak Alsatian at hime, but the younger generations use French and many do not have knowlegde of Alsatian. As such, it is encouraged as a traditional language that must be recognised, and you will find that Alsatian is now taught in some French high schools.

How many people speak Alsatian?

Alsatian Culture

A spot of Culture
History in Alsace had certainly been eventful, the area was orginally been part of the Roman Empire, and since then it has been passed between French and German control numerous times. You will see from just glancing that the traditional buildings and names, however, that the region traditionally belongs to the German culture.

Alsatian Food and Drink
Traditional Alsatian cuisine includes 'baeckeoffe', 'tartes flambées', 'choucroute' and 'fleischnackes'. Many culinary traditions are marked by serving pork in various forms. Wines from Alsace are invariably white, they are a strong Germanic influence and perhaps the most famous are the dry reislings. Alsace is also the main beer-producing region of France.
