Altura – located on the south eastern corner of Portugal

Altura appeals to couples and families looking to spend time on their own together. Altura is a 40 minute transfer from Faro airport. This gives you plenty of time to look at surrounding scenery as well as get an understanding of the location of the resort and the location of your accommodation within the resort. The beach in Altura is long and clean with fine white sand leading down to the waters edge. Most of the accommodation in Altura consists of self-catering apartments, although there are also a few hotels available as well.

Altura – limited activities to choose from

Altura itself has a limited number of activities for you to enjoy. However, many of the apartments and hotels put together entertainment programmes for you to enjoy. Golf is just a 15 minute drive away and is something that both experts and beginners can join in. there are plenty of water sports available at the beaches in Altura such as, windsurfing, scuba diving, snorkelling, water-skiing, jet-skiing and sailing. There are also plenty of excursions for you to go on such as a trip to Seville or the Old Algarve. There are also plenty of island tours for you to go on, with one ending up at Moorish castle in Mertola. Silves castle is a popular place to visit as are the Monchique Mountains.

Altura – a tame nightlife compared to some other resorts

There are a handful of restaurants in Altura mainly offering Portuguese and a lot of seafood. However you may find some more familiar international cuisine in some areas. The nightlife is a lot quieter in Altura than it is in some other resorts as there are only a couple of bars in the area. They are not open all night but occasionally have entertainment such as live music. Other than that, you are likely to find entertainment in the accommodation complexes. The main things you will find in shops are souvenirs and food so head to other resorts for more serious shopping. There are taxis and a bus service available in Altura, however car hire comes highly recommended.

Altura – over 3,000 hours of pure sunshine a year

The weather in Altura is what attracts to many people each year. The summers in Altura are long and dry with winters continuing to stay mild with limited rainfall. July and August are the hottest months in Altura with average temperatures reaching 30°C. You will also find up to 12 hours of sunshine a day meaning you have plenty of time to enjoy the day. The coastal breezes tend to keep the temperatures slightly lower to enable you to feel more comfortable in the heat. The spring and autumn is still warm with temperatures at 17-19°C. The coldest winter months are January and December although the temperature is till at around 15°C. There is also still around 6 hours of sunshine a day. From November to March is when most of the rainfall comes however on average there are only around 50 days of rainfall a year.
