Plakias is a resort that suits couples, families and people who enjoy walking and nature. It caters well to the middle and budget conscious market. Unfortunately, if you are looking for a lively nightlife, then this is not the resort for you. The transfer times vary but on the whole it is usually around 1 and a half hours meaning you have plenty of time to look around at surrounding scenery as well as gain an understanding of the location of the resort and the location of your accommodation within the resort. The beach in the resort is good, covered in sand leading down to the waters edge. Sunbeds and parasols are available for hire and the beach is good for swimming, although the sea can be rough at times so it is important to never leave children unaccompanied. There are a number of hotels and apartments in the resort, most of watch are 2-3-stars offering self-catering, room only and half-board.
Plakias is a resort that has some brilliant water based activities such as windsurfing, surfing, scuba diving, snorkelling, sailing, jet-skiing, water-skiing, canoeing, paragliding and the opportunity to hire out pedalloes. Other activities to keep you away from the water include cycling, walking along nature trails, bird-watching or going round to explore the nearby archaeological sites. There are also a number of excursions for you to enjoy such as exploring the south coast of Crete, taking scenic mountain trips, going to the Samaria Gorge, visiting historic towns such as Rethymnon, seeing the ancient Minoan palace of Knossos and the Heraklion archaeological museum or even going on one of the many boat trips to other resorts or neighbouring islands.
There are many restaurants in Plakias for you to enjoy. Many of the restaurants and taverns offer traditional Greek cuisine as well as a lot of seafood. There are also a few more international cuisines available, particularly in hotels. Nightlife in the resort is quite tame, with a few bars, including music bars and a couple of discos. You will also find that a number of hotels offer evening entertainment. Shopping in the resort is limited to mini markets, supermarkets, craft stores, souvenirs, and beachwear. Public transport is good with a bus service taking you to and from Rethymnon, a mini train running between villages, water taxis and general taxis. Car hire can also be found.
Plakias summer season lasts from April until October and it tends to be very hot and dry and then mild in the winter. However all year round, the weather is good making it an ideal holiday destination all year round. From the beginning of the summer in April, the temperatures are already around 18°C and there are around 8 hours of sunshine a day. Temperatures continue to rise throughout the summer with them peaking at around 27°C in August. By then, there are 13 hours of sunshine a day. There is a gentle coastal breeze that keeps the temperature at a manageable level. From September to October there are 9-11 hours of sunshine a day and temperatures still remain at around 20°C. The winter rainfall starts in December, however the wettest months are January and February. There is a minimum of 4 hours of sunshine a day in this period with temperatures dropping to around 12°C.
