Aghios Nikolaos is the perfect resort for those of you looking for a busy holiday with a vibrant nightlife. If you are looking for a quiet relaxing holiday then this would not be the ideal resort for you. The transfer time from the airport to the resort is around 1 and half hours meaning you have plenty of time to look at surrounding scenery in the resort as well as gain an understanding of the location of the resort and the location of your accommodation within the resort. The beach is covered in golden sands that lead down to the waters edge. Sunbeds and parasols are available to hire and there a beachfront bar is nearby. Swimming is safe but children still need to be supervised. Other beaches are also popular and located nearby. There is a wide selection of hotels and self-catering apartments to enjoy in Aghios Nikolaos. The hotels range from 2-5-star and generally offer room only, half-board or all-inclusive.
Aghios Nikolaos has a number or beach and water based activities available. The water sports include snorkelling, scuba diving, surfing, windsurfing, water-skiing, jet-skiing and sailing. The many swimming pools are also very popular. Mini golf is a popular activity in Aghios Nikolaos, especially among couples and families. There are plenty of walks to go on in the surrounding countryside, providing you with some brilliant views of the resort and other areas of the island. There are also a few museums in the resort, including an archaeological museum and a folk-art museum. There are a number of excursions for you to choose from, including boat trips to places such as Elounda, Sitai and the palm-tree beach at Vai. Knossos Palace and the Heraklion Museum are popular places to see and there are many island tours and boat trips to other resorts such as Chania and Rethymnon for you to enjoy.
Aghios Nikolaos is a resort that offers you so many cuisines that you are spoilt for choice. There are obviously a number of Greek taverns offering traditional Greek cuisines and a lot of seafood. If this is not for you, then there are plenty of international cuisines to be found. These include Spanish, Chinese, Indian, Italian and British. The nightlife in Aghios Nikolaos is brilliant with a wide selection of lively bars and nightclubs to choose from. There is live music, cocktails and karaoke available into the night for your entertainment. Shopping in the resort is good with many boutiques, souvenir stores, leather goods, jewellery stores and antique stores. There are also plenty of supermarkets and mini markets which come in handy if you are self-catering. There is a regular bus service in the resort that takes you into the resort of Elounda as well as other areas in Crete.
Aghios Nikolaos summer season lasts from April until October and it tends to be very hot and dry and then mild in the winter. However all year round, the weather is good making it an ideal holiday destination all year round. From the beginning of the summer in April, the temperatures are already around 18°C and there are around 8 hours of sunshine a day. Temperatures continue to rise throughout the summer with them peaking at around 27°C in August. By then, there are 13 hours of sunshine a day. There is a gentle coastal breeze that keeps the temperature at a manageable level. From September to October there are 9-11 hours of sunshine a day and temperatures still remain at around 20°C. The winter rainfall starts in December, however the wettest months are January and February. There is a minimum of 4 hours of sunshine a day in this period with temperatures dropping to around 12°C. The east of Crete tends to be very hot and dry.
