London City and London Heathrow have been named as the airports with the lowest number of aircraft arriving and departing on time in the first three months of 2008.
The CAA showed that only 56% of flights at London Heathrow were on schedule which was down 9% on the first three months of 2007.
58% of London City’s flights were on time, however this was still down 12% on the same time the previous year.
A City airport spokesman said that the reason for this was that the airport was at its full capacity at this time and there was a period of bad weather around the Docklands which would have delayed the take-off and landing of flights.
London City is now new and improved, with four new aircraft stands, 250 extra seats in the departure area, a new bar, a WHSmith newsagent and an extended Duty Free section. Wi-Fi will then be available from the end of July.
The problems at Heathrow have been blamed on a lack of capacity at the airport. As there are only two runways operating 100% capacity of flights, any bad weather or other issues can cause major delays to all flights.
Most of the airports in the UK had decreased in performance, with all of them experiencing more delays than in the previous year. The average delay for people last year was 16 minutes compared with 18 minutes this year. Flights to Guernsey had the most reliable service with 86% of flights going on time.
