Lovers of all things artistic should consider paying Frankfurt a visit in 2012, as the German city is set to play host to some world-class exhibitions and events, as well as the opening of a new art facility.

Frankfurt’s Stadel Museum will expand its current premises into a new underground exhibition space in February, with the museum’s impressive collection of contemporary art being moved into the new hall. The space is said to have been designed to be lit by natural light, which enters the new space through circular skylights.

Fans of the work of celebrated American artist Jeff Koons will want to check out a new exhibition the artist put together in partnership with the Liebieghaus Sculpture Museum and Schirn Kunsthalle. The exhibition will be split into two categories, with the Schirn focusing on some of Koons’ less well-known works and the Liebieghaus displaying some of his most important and recognisable works. The exhibition will open on 29 June and run through until 23 September, giving visitors plenty of time to book some cheap flights to Frankfurt and plan a cultural city break.

Other events to enjoy in Frankfurt next year include Luminale 12, during which various structures around the city will be swathed in lighting displays and projections. Luminale 12 runs between 15 and 20 April, and on the following day, 12 April, art galleries and museums across the city will take part in the city’s Museum Night, during which visitors can wander the participating institutions’ corridors until the small hours.
