Malta Review
Overview
The Maltese archipelago, situated almost at the centre of the Mediterranean, includes the islands of Malta, Gozo, Comino, Comminotto and Filfla. It has made it an important strategic base since the earliest days of navigation, and thus has been visited by many cultures.
The first significant civilisation here flourished in the third millennium BC, leaving behind fascinating megalithic temples. Later the island was occupied by the Phoenicians, the Carthaginians and the Romans.
The Maltese islands have indeed been described as one big open-air museum. It is easy to delve into the islands’ mysterious prehistory, retrace the footsteps of St Paul or see where the Knights of St John defended Christendom. Visitors can explore medieval walled citadels and splendid baroque churches and palaces.
However, history alone does not draw the annual summer influx of tourists, who manage to triple the population of Malta. Visitors also come for the beautiful clear blue waters, secluded bays and sandy beaches, and also to glimpse the tranquil traditional villages that still speckle the landscape, celebrating lively fiestas.
Malta’s independence from Britain was achieved in 1964, and 40 years on Malta joined the EU in May 2004.
Weather in Malta

although warmer clothes may occasionally be necessary in spring and
autumn and on cooler evenings. A light raincoat is advisable for winter.

"I was really happy with the hotel. I went in November so the weather wasnt the best had a bit of rain, but the hotels facilities made up for it - had an indoor pool as well as sauna, jacuzzi & pool tables. Really polite and hard working staff. Ive paid a lot more money in the past and didnt receive the service I received at the Selmun Palace - keep up the good work guys and the Pownall family thank you."

"This is a well-run, well-staffed, quality hotel and clearly low season deals are exceptionally good value. If there were anything to quibble about with the facilities, staff, meals, etc. it would simply be about trivial points - It's hard to fault any aspect of it."

"Hotel very clean and comfortable. All staff very friendly and helpful. Rooms nicely furnished. Pool areas very clean with beautiful sunbeds and lots of them. The only criticism is for the Bistro where we found on one particular evening that the service was very poor having to wait nearly 2 hours for our meal and then drinks, food, was not what we had ordered. In fairness after complaining they did not charge us for the meal.
Would recommend this hotel."

Pergola Club Hotel And Spa

"Marvellous value when you consider the rack rate for the room. A bit slow on the uptake regarding a minor problem with the wash basin. Numbering the ground floor seven and the top floor zero rather confusing, as is the number and combination of lifts that you have to take to reach various parts of the building. Once you have worked out where floor 7 is, it is only 100 yards to the main street and bus stops where you can get to many parts of the island for less than a pound. 11.65 buys you a 5 day ticket to use any bus on the island. The shuttle turned out to be a personal taxi and on both occassions the drivers drove courteously and well."

"We had a lovely week at this hotel. We were greeted very early in the morning with a smile and very friendly welcome. The room was very clean, though the bathroom was a little tired. The several levels were a little confusing at first but were soon sorted. Breakfast was adequate and plentiful. Generally very much worth the visit. Would go again."

"We stayed in the self catering apartments, about a 5 minute walk up the hill behind the hotel. The apartments were very clean, towels changed every day, cooking facilities were good and there was a mini market just down the road for supplies. Location is very good, just a few minutes walk to the promenade. There's no beach, but the hotel has a roof top pool that you can use.
The apartments are about a 5 minute walk up a slight hill though, so not suitable for people who would find this difficult. Sliema is a good resort, handy for the capital (a short ferry or bus ride) and handy for boat trips."

Santana Hotel

"Excellent location. Very short walk to the bus station from where buses travel to nearly all parts of the island. Also it's just a short walk to the promenade. The view from our balcony on the 3rd floor was of a derelict building site at the rear of the hotel.
If you choose to hire a car, directly opposite the Santana is a large public free car park. Staff in all areas were excellent. We were on B&B, which was good value. The hotel had a good evening meal offering, there were also a good number of bars in the immediate vicinity offering dining facilities. Try "The Tavern", about 200 yards from the Santana - recommended.
We would certainly stay at the Santana again - you do the same, you will not be disappointed."

"While we only used the restaurant for breakfast, there was plenty of variation, including hot & cold food, also very clean and spacious. We had a superior room, which was huge, with individual air conditioning. The maids cleaned every day and if you wished, you could have clean towels every day. Our only criticism was the creaky beds.
The Cafe Castagna was very good, inexpensive for lunch and the staff were very polite and friendly. The entertainment was very limited, although we went out most evenings so it wasn't a problem for us.
I could recommend this Hotel to anyone."

Cardor Holiday Complex

"Before heading to this complex I was very worried because of previous comments, but we had a great time and no complaints.
We had 2 apartments on the second floor, one a funny shape and not so good lounge area but big bedroom and nice front balcony. The other was a better shaped lounge, a decent bedroom and a smaller balcony overlooking the pool. Not the most modern looking, but for the length of time they are used, we were happy.
Both rooms had maids in every day and all but one day we had clean towels. There were rooms that had no balcony, so I am so glad I emailed the complex in advance to make sure ours had one. I can see why some people would find these other apartments not so nice .
The ladies who ran the reception at the apartments side were really nice and helpful all the time.
We had to report our fan wasn't working properly and within half an hour we had a nice new one. And when we said that our hot water wasn't working, again someone was sent and all was well within no time.
The pool is just outside the back door and is shared with the hotel, so can feel very cramped around it, as the sunbeds are all very close together and in rows.
The hotel has very good priced snacks in the cafe bar, but we didn't use the restaurant so can't comment.
The situation of the complex is perfect if you want to see the island, as the bus station is just about 50m along the road and its only 54cents to go to the capital.
I would go back no problem, but would definitely request an apartment with balcony again."

"The hotel was in a convenient location to Comeeno and Gozo. Well catered for children and disabled people. Some areas were a bit dated, but the food and the other services were very good. Big thanks to the hotel manager, Malcom Howe, for arranging the hire car."

"For an inexpensive AI holiday it was good value for money. The food was basic but OK - we didn't starve. Enjoyed our stay. Watch out if there's a party of school children! 60+ descended on our recent visit. Very noisy on their late arrival, although to be fair, that's to be expected from youngsters."

"The staff are great with the kids and very helpful and thoughtfuln They had a table reserved every night for us with a high chair ready and they even had a kettle in our room ready for when we arrived for bottles. The cleaners gave my son toys for the pool which other people had left.
The pool and jacuzzi was great, even for my young boys and rooms were cleaned daily. Only down side was that the lifts tend not to work to well even though there are 3, so you could wait up to 20 minutes for a lift and when it arrives it is normally full as it only holds 5 people. Also food was edible but not great, and if you want toast it normally has to go through the machine 3 times before it browns. "

Soreda Hotel

"We stayed at the Soreda Hotel at the beginnning of June and for the money that we paid, we couldn't fault it.
Our room was a very large size, with air conditioning that we soon found essential and the maid service was excellent. Our only complaints would be that the lift to our floor sometimes had a foul smell in it and that one of the inside seating areas sometimes smelt a bit fusty.
We stayed Bed and Breakfast and there was always a large selection of food. We didn't actually use the hotel restaurant apart from that, as we had the use of a hire car for our entire stay and normally ate out.
Parking was less of a problem than other places in Malta and overall we found the hotel a great base for exploring the island and great value for money."
