Our guide to Madeira
Overview
Madeira is a singularly beautiful island. The scenery is memorable and remarkably diverse, especially bearing in mind the island’s modest size. Madeira has been described as a ‘floating garden’, reflecting centuries of cultivation. The rich volcanic soil, mild climate and abundant rainfall (especially in the north) have been responsible for contrasting landscapes: lush river valleys, terraced hillsides planted with vines and bananas and dense primeval forest.
The most enjoyable way to explore the island is to follow the course of the levadas (irrigation channels) which crisscross the countryside. The island’s burgeoning coastal resorts are geared to the demands of modern tourism and the expansion of Santa Catarina Airport is expected to lead to a marked increase in the number of foreign visitors over the next decade.

CS Madeira Atlantic Resort & Sea SPA

"We thought this hotel was one of the best we have ever stayed in. Although a little quiet, but that's just how we like it. As it is a rather large hotel, the pool area could be very overcrowded, had the hotel been full. The pool area is, however, spectacular. The buffet breakfast was of a good standard but warm food was a little cold. The rooms and the views were great.
Overall we had 5 days of bliss and relaxation, which was our aim."

"Absolutely the best hotel in Funchal and the best location as well. It is away from the noisy hustle/bustle and has the most breathtaking view of the harbour from it roof terrace gardens and pool. Very courteous staff and well stocked bar with excellent restaurant and free coach service into Funchal town."

"Our second visit to this hotel. Same high standards but with additional facilities as it is part of the Porto Mare complex. Mostly couples in the hotel, Madiera is not really a family destination and is comparitivly expensive. Will go again.
Very pleased with Flightline's service and prices. "

"Excellent service and hotel. On arrival there was no reservation in our name - the hotel manager quickly sorted out the reservation and was very helpful. The hotel was immaculate and the rooms were very spacious, furthermore it was in a central position."

"Very good hotel. Friendly & helpful staff. Very good breakfast. Everything worked fine.
The hotel is known locally as the 'Florisol' Hotel and not 'Dorisol Florisol' (This could be confused with another hotel specifically named 'Dorisol'). "

Pestana Grand Hotel

"This February was our second stay at the Pestana Grand Hotel. It is ideally located for a peaceful stay, close to the sea, 3 miles West of Funchal, but with shops and cafes close by. The hotel is first rate, with large comfortable rooms [choose sea view] with comfortable loungers on the South-facing balconies, overlooking the beautiful pools and well-tended larger gardens and palm trees [larger than average for Madeira hotels].
From the garden, you can walk straight out onto the promenade at the edge of a low cliff. A few families with toddlers and all ages but no activities specifically for children. Bus into town included. Madeira is colourful, even in winter months. Food: eat in restaurants rather than buffet in hotel, best to get offer on 3 meals with wine when you arrive, rather than full board if off season, since not all restaurants in house are open every night. "This was a good value hotel although not easy to locate from the website, I couldn't locate it without phoning the hotel. The lifts were not always easy to use. On one you had to bang the door hard to exit. Food, however, was excellent and the staff always keen to help."

"Room nicely furnished and clean, also bathroom really good. Breakfast was good, with a good choice. Evening meal (which we only had once) was poor. Not much choice, not very good and expensive at 22 euros. Also the tea and coffee facilities were a farce, as they only provided the sachets free on the first evening. Thereafter it was 5 euros a day."

"Our first impressions of the hotel was how tired it looked from the outside. Also, inside it real'y needed totally redecorating. That said, it was clean and the staff were very professional. We would go back."

"Modern, clean and well located hotel - although use of public transport, car or taxi required for central Funchal. Superb fish restaurant within 2 minutes walk. Rooms with sea view are worth paying the extra for as others look directly into block of residential flats. Overall 9/10."

"This hotel is in a great location, about a ten-minute walk from the centre of Funchal and not too hilly. We had breakfast but it was poor, bad service and little choice. The pool is on the roof, so anyone disabled would not be able to access it, as you have to go upstairs. The other problem for some disabled people would be bathroom access, as the door is narrow. Our room was over reception on the first floor and there was a lot of night-time noise from the neighbours outside, but I think other rooms would have been less noisy.
Overall the hotel was quite good, but don't bother with breakfast!"

"Better than expected hotel, considering the price paid. Breakfast was varied and plenty of it. Room was cleaned everyday. Self catering room we had was very big and plenty of room for us all. Reception staff were helpful and friendly.
Very close to shops and resturants and a free bus into town. Restaurant in the hotel was good and served a varied menu. We felt very secure in the hotel."

"We booked a Superior room, however on arrival we were offered a poky little room that was quite chlaustrophobic. After complaining to the management we were offered a nice room with a balcony.
The approach to the hotel is very steep and not suitable to those who cannot climb hills.
Otherwise the hotel was fine. "

"The best thing about the Gorgulho is its position near the sea. Our 5th floor room had better views than many of the more expensive hotels whose balconies looked over the busy main road. The holiday was good value for money, but if you want perfection the Gorgulho may not be for you - the rooms were on the small side and, although clean, they were in need of some maintenance and painting. The bathroom was spotlessly clean, but a lot of the tiles on the floor were cracked and the ones around the bath needed grouting. The staff were all helpful and friendly. The continental breakfast was good - fruit, yoghurt, cheese, ham, fresh bread and rolls, etc. but the hot food was a bit limited."
