The original building on the site of the hotel was constructed in 1884 as the summer estate of Mrs. William Morris Hunt, an artist's widow. The stonework from this palatial so-called cottage, which she named Mizzentop, remains beneath the building that bears its name. The hotel was founded in 2009 and comprises a total of 98 rooms.
