Greece Review
Overview
Greece was the birthplace of European civilisation. The period from 700BC saw the rise of the great city states of Athens, Corinth and Sparta, frequently engaged in long struggles for supremacy, and uniting only when faced with the common threat of invasion by the Persian Empire. The zenith was reached in the fifth century BC when Athens became the cultural and artistic centre of the Mediterranean, producing magnificent works of architecture, sculpture, drama and literature.
Greece today offers the traveller the comforts of modern Europe in close proximity to the stark beauty of the ancient world. There is no denying that the historical and cultural heritage of Greece continues to resonate throughout the modern Western world - in its literature, art, philosophy and politics. Reminders of the country’s glory are all over Greece - from Athens’Parthenon and Delphi’s Temple of Apollo, to the ruins on Crete of the Minóan city of Knossós, a civilisation reaching even further back into history.
Scattered throughout the calm blue waters of the Aegean are Greece’s 1,400 islands, the largest of which is Crete, each with its own special story. The serenity of islands like Skópelos contrasts with the hedonistic party islands such as Mykonos and Páros where the worship of Dionysus, the god of revelry, continues to the beat of garage and house music. Athens’s previous glory in sports was restored when the Olympic Games returned home in 2004.
Since Greece won her independence in 1830 from the Turkish Ottoman Empire, there have been problems in the relationship between the two neighbours. Achieving a political settlement in Cyprus remains a key concern of Greece’s foreign policy. The situation seems to have improved following the accession of Greek-controlled Cyprus to the EU in 2004. Greece has now explicitly backed Turkey’s own EU application.

Weather in Greece
Climate
Greece has a warm Mediterranean climate. In summer, dry hot days are often relieved by stiff breezes, especially in the north and coastal areas. Athens can be stiflingly hot, so visitors should allow time to acclimatise. The evenings are cool. Winters are mild in the south but much colder in the north. November to March is the rainy season.
Required Clothing
Lightweight clothes during summer months, including protection from the midday sun. Light sweaters are needed for evenings. Waterproofs are advised for autumn. Winter months can be quite cold, especially in the northern mainland, so normal winter wear will be required.

Poseidon Beach (Santorini)

"This was the third time I stayed in the Poseidon Beach. Each time, it seems to get better. The staff were all the same as before, which was a great benefit.
With regards to my ratings, it could not be better. Along with this is the beach, location and surrounding facilities, which are all very close by. Although the hotel is, as good as, on the beach itself, it is very, very quiet at night time in the rooms.
All round, an excellent place to stay. Not recommended for disabled, due to the fact that there are steps up to the hotel (5/6 number) and the room size does not allow for easy access if one needed to use a wheelchair."

"We had a fantastic holiday at the Continental Palace Hotel in Psalidi. The staff are the friendliest we\\'ve ever come across, especially Irene on reception and Tassos in the bar. The hotel was clean and the food was very good.
We are planning on going back next year but for 2 weeks instead of one. Thank you!"

"Brilliant service, brilliant location, brilliant room - brilliant hotel!
However, we did speak to a few people who complained that there wasn't much to do in Svoronata. If you're looking for a holiday with lots of night life, clubs, bars etc - look elsewhere (maybe Corfu). If you're looking for somewhere with breathtaking scenery, fantastic climate and lovely locals - go to Svoranta.
I could not recommend the Babara Studios more highly.
Only downside was the local taxis were a total rip off - I guess no matter where you travel, some things never change! ;-) "

Evripides Village Hotel (Kos)
|
|
|
"The Hotel was good except for the pricey bar and snack prices, everything seemed to be 2 euros plus, even for the smaller items such as chocolate bars! One thing that is worth noting is the bus service into the town 1.60 euro per person for a single, so if you're only a couple it works out much cheaper than a taxi."

"This has to be the nicest hotel I have ever stayed in. The family who run it are extremely kind and helpful, nothing is too much trouble for them and they do things the minute you ask or tell them something!
At the time of our stay, there were 2 elderly gentlemen staying, the family drove them around took them to the shops and to Rhodes town and asked for nothing in return. The hotel itself is suitable for people of all ages - there were groups of young people and families and everyone got on with each other and respected one another!
My friend and I are in our early 20's and we had an amazing stay, We would recommend anyone to stay there and we would go back and stay again."

Apostolta Island Resort & Spa Skala
|
|
|
"We stayed at the Louis Apostolta in Skala with two friends in July 2008. We had booked two twin bedded rooms with seaview. Upon arrival we were offered a free upgrade to a suite with private pool instead. That was fantastic. The buffet style food was superb and a huge choice was available for both breakfast & dinner. The drinks were reasonably priced and all areas of the hotel were clean. Service given was first class and nothing was too much trouble. All the staff were both friendly & professional.
We would highly recommend this hotel. However, it is not suited for the disabled or for people with mobility problems as there are over 100 steps from the dining room to the main outside pool area. Otherwise, a great hotel & nice quiet location."

Carda Beach (Kos)
|
|
|
"The Carda Beach Hotel was absolutely fabulous! I was a bit apprehensive before going after reading some of the reviews on the net, however, as soon as we arrived I knew there was no need to be. The hotel was exactly how it looked on the pictures on the website.
We stayed in a suite room with a sharing pool, which was very relaxing and definitely luxiourious. You do share the pool with eight other rooms, however having said that, there was no more than 3 groups around the pool at one time, which was good (often it was only us there!). The cleanliness of the rooms was fantastic, towels were changed every day apart from your pool towels (yes you are provided with pool towels), which were changed once a week or whenever you wished at an extra cost of 1 euro each time, which we thought was cheap! Bedding changed every day if you wished. Mini bar in room is free and topped up twice a-week.
The main pools were the best I've seen, they were all really big and there were more than enough beds. None of that towels on beds the night before or anything. We didnt spend anytime at the main pool, due to the sharing pool that we had, but every time we passed it looked quite empty and quiet, which is good.
The food in the hotel was brilliant and I would urge anyone to try all of the food, even if you dont know what it is! there was a lot to choose from, from either the main restaurant, the Italian restaurant or the Chinese restaurant. All three restaurants are gorgeous (and included in for all inclusive guests) but you do have to book the Chinese and the Italian restaurant the day before but well worth the wait!
All the staff at the hotel are brilliant, especially the reception staff and the bar staff. Spyros and Pavel on the bar are really lovely and friendly, they dont like to keep people waiting on the bar for drinks so serve you as quick as possible!
Overall we had the best holiday ever and would definitely recommend the hotel to anyone. Enjoy!"

"A clean hotel, very friendly staff (Maria & Margaitta) anything you ask they will try their best to do, cannot fault anything have been to this hotel 4 times & will definitely go again. It is in a fabulous location, close to everything and although near to Bar Street, you dont hear any noise. Recommended for all ages. Only went self catering so cannot comment on the food and there was no pool, but the beach is only 60 meters away, so that was never a problem."

Xenos Kamara Beach (zante)

"The Xenos Kamara Beach is one of the best apartment accommodations in Argassi. The reception staff were always ready to help with any problems and recommended trips and restaurants, etc.
We stayed in a side garden room, with beautiful views of the sunrise, sea and Mount Skopos. The 2 bedrooms were very spacious and the kitchen well equipped. The pool area was kept spotlessly clean by George, who also runs the snack bar, which was competively priced.
We will consider returning to the Xenos."
