Cyprus Review
Overview
Cyprus is a deeply enjoyable holiday island that boasts myriad charms year round. Within one compact and sweepingly attractive island are a variety of rich landscapes and eclectic travel experiences.
Cyprus as a destination is not just about its (admittedly very attractive and impressively clean) beaches, as it also offers skiing and hiking in its voluminous mountains, charming hilltop villages and vine-blessed slopes with nearby towns where you can sample the seriously underrated Cypriot wine. Then there is the sweep of Roman and Greek remnants that scatter the island and sit dramatically amongst its coast and mountains. Moving into the towns and cities, there is a dash of Mediterranean swagger to go with the bright lights and buzzing nightlife.
The rich story of the island can be traced back over 10,000 years. Like many Mediterranean islands, Cyprus has long been seen as an important strategic base with various civilisations having swept through over the years from the Ottoman Turks to the British, the Greeks to the Romans.
While independence was achieved in August 1960, in 1974 Turkish troops arrived on the northern coast of Cyprus, having been ‘invited’ by the Turkish Cypriot leader, Rauf Denktash, to intervene in order to protect the Turkish community. Since the Turkish army took control of the northern third of the island it has remained partitioned and UN peacekeeping forces maintain a truce between the two sides with all attempts to date to find a solution failing.
Despite its political problems, Cyprus is a modern country that effortlessly marries European culture with indelible links to the past. Here, visitors can discover a compact world of clean beaches and rugged mountain peaks, vineyards studded with olive trees and ancient ruins that stir the imagination, citrus groves and old stone villages where 21st-century Europe seems a very long way away indeed.

"Great hotel with good facilities at a bargain price. Also very close to the heart of the main square, however I think the pepper bar at the hotel is the best in napa."

Aquamare Beach Hotel And Spa

"We loved the position of this hotel. About 20 minutes sea front walk to Paphos harbour. Lovely safe beach for swimming / snorkelling. Evening meal was a bit late (1930) for our liking. Although the food was fantastic. We would recommend this hotel and stay again if we returned to Cyprus. Excellent!"

Green Bungalows Hotel Apartments

|
"We stayed here only for one night as a base for a night out, but I have nothing but praise for the place. Obviously it was very quiet because it was low season, but is right near the square so a brilliant base for partying. The lady on reception, Natasha, was extremely friendly and helpful.
I would not hesitate to recommend Green Bungalows to anyone - in fact I have already booked to go back"

Kefalos Beach Tourist Village (paphos)
|
|
|
"The beds were very uncomfortable. Menu would benefit from a bit more choice for kids. The beach resembled a building site with large rocks mixed in with what little sand there was - if an investment was made in some sand, it would be a lovely beach with great views. All that aside, we had a wonderful stay."

"Would book this hotel again. The food, service, staff and quality was fantastic.
Yes, it is a bit out of the way, but there's a bus service and taxis outside. Can't wait to go back again. If you book this, you will not be disappointed!"

Malama Holiday Village
|
|
|
"It is very hard to find any real fault with the Malama resort. We have just arrived back after 10 days at the resort. The Malama is ideal for families with the pool area being very child friendly especially if your little ones are not good swimmers. There are 2 outdoor pools with the main one being split between a large pool and a smaller kiddie pool. A second pool is also available. The hotel was impeccably clean which makes a difference when being on holiday, the gardens are always being attended to and the rooms are cleaned daily. There is an entertainments team who provide a kiddie club and various activities throughout the day. At night there is a kids disco and then some entertainment which although not the best, was worthy of a watch and still keeps the kids enthralled. The staff are very friendly and made this a thoroughly enjoyable holiday. The village itself is about 4km from the main resort of Protaras, although there are a few supermarkers, bars and restaurants within walking distance. Protaras has all the usual bars and restaurants and is a lively resort without being OTT. In all this is one of the best holidays I have been on and I would highly recommend the Malama. Excellent food, pool, service, cleanliness, friendliness - first class! "

Kings Hotel
|
|
|
"We have been to the Kings Hotel for about 12 years and feel like part of the family at this family-run hotel. They cannot do enough to accommodate your needs. The rooms are quite basic, but then unless you go Ritz style most hotel rooms are basic. They are cleaned daily and if there is something you need but have not got, you only need to ask and they will do their best to help you. The pool is not huge but really adequate.
Speaking for myself and my husband, we love this hotel and the people who run it."

Debbiexenia Hotel Apartments Protaras
|
|
|
"So glad we made the choice of Debbiexenia for this holiday. The rooms may be basic, but they are clean and tidy and well looked after, all you really need for a holiday. The meals from the pool bar were second to none and well priced. It was far enough out of Protaras to be nice and quiet, but still close to a great beach.
A big supermarket is a stone's throw away and a short walk or taxi from the resort centre of Protaras. If you prefer to stay in the area of the hotel, which we did once or twice, there are a number of shops, bars and restaraunts that will keep you amused, plus the quads/mopeds and watersports at the beach too.
So for us anyway it was an ideal spot and we will be back! "

Senator Hotel Apartments

"We really enjoyed staying at the Senator. The Hotel staff were very friendly and helpful. The room was cleaned regulary with fresh linen. The food was of a high standard. My only comments would be that there were ants in the room a lot of the time. The shower was not very powerful and there could have been a little more air conditioning in the bar area and downstairs where the toilets were.
Other than that, it suited us very much and we had a great stay there."

"Friendly & helpful staff, especially at front desk. Good standard of cleanliness. Good breakfast service & quality. Bed mattress could be improved & bathrooms are small and poor design. Should tear out baths and install shower units only. Good value hotel for all but disabled. I didn't see disabled access at front entrance. "

Windmills Apartments

"Lovely place, close to the main Protaras strip about 1 mile drive. Entertainment is ok, the restaurant isnt that nice and service was a bit poor, but the bar and the apartments were lovely and lots to do around the area. Tip: get a scooter and have a good look around, beaches are lovely, right by 2 of them. Not recommended for disabled as stairs to all apartments, even the ground floor has a step."
